We are going to slowly implement the official procedures of Gracie Barra. We already do an outstanding job regarding work ethic, technique, and attitude. The changes will mostly surround curriculum and etiquette.
Curriculum changes will not be too noticeable. Basically, we will focus on one set of techniques for a week at a time. We will teach new things every week for 16 weeks.
The dojo etiquette is very strict but nothing we cannot handle. I will place it below. It focuses on particular behavior on the mat which should not be a problem for any of us. Off the mat is a different story.
Bow to the center of the mat when you enter.
Bow to the centre of the mat when you exit.
Keep a respectful posture on the dojo.
Classes begin with a formal bow to the instructor with students lining up in descending grade order.
Classes end with a formal bow to the instructor and then to the picture of Carlos Gracie Senior.
During Class, when the instructor is demonstrating the techniques, every student must sit in seize.
For safety reasons, if you are late sit by the side of the mat and wait for the permission from the Professor.
For safety reasons, if you need to leave the mat or leave earlier you must ask permission from the Professor.
Bow to your partner before and after practice.
Talking should be kept to a minimum level and should relate to the class subject.
Absolutely no foul language inside the school.
Do not belch inside the dojo.
Keep finger and toe nails short for everyones safety.
All students must wear the official Gracie Barra uniform. The uniform pants and top must be the same color.
It is mandatory to wear a t-shirt or rash guard underneath the Kimono.
The Kimono must be washed at least once a weekly. A dirty kimono is a sign of disrespect.
The Kimono must be worn at all times.
When tying the Kimono, face the wall.
The belt is represents your progress. Keep it on.
Refer to Black-Belt Instructors as "Professor" and to Carlos Gracie Jr. as "Master".
All metal objects, jewelry, piercing, neckless or other such items should be removed.
Any questions about this should be directed to myself or Phil.
There is some gray area with some of these things.
I know for example that a lot of guys have different gis. I understand that and am not requiring anyone to buy a GB gi. If you don't have one though and are looking for a new gi, make it a GB gi. I know they are expensive but we are a team and they should be worn to tournaments, seminars, or any other official gathering.
I know this tranistion will be an easy one because of the respectul culture at our academy. I will lead by example and expect all of our advanced students to do the same.
guys, one other thing: as you guys become more adept at submissions i always use the 10 second rule:if the other person doesn't tap i let go!!!if it's the comp class thats different, same as mma.most of the regulars are to the point of really being able to ''hurt''someone if or when they want to!so let's start thinking about it when your cranking on someone and ''the other person'' doesn't realize if my elbow flinches a 64th of an inch it's wrecked!!!especially in regards to LEGS!!!this is a great unwritten rule, and guys i feel i have to say it because i show subs up there that all academy's do not or i should say use to teach, and do not now for safety reason's.an accident is an accident but i think most of you guys are friends now and friends try not to put friends in the ER...
