What do you like in a class?

Running a class can be quite difficult.  As an instructor, I have a curriculum that has to be covered.  I also don't like when the classes seem to repetitive.  I know that many students do not have the luxury of free rolling on a regular basis so I want to make sure enough rolling is taking place during the class.

So what do you guys like?  Less time spent drilling technique and more time rolling?  More technique?  Technique followed by situational rolling?

I like alot of technique and sit. rolling. As a beginner I need to be immersed in the basics as much as possible.

King of the "guard". Whichever that guard is, half, turtle ect. That before or after instruction is pretty good. When just rolling I tend to drift off into experimentation land which is good for certain things but I also like the fact that there is a clear win/loss aspect with king of the guard.

All of the above. I really like the variety our school has. Some days I just want to drill technique over and over. Other days I want to roll the entire time. I also like the other stuff we do once in a great while, like the Battle Royales and Phil's ass-kicking conditioning classes.

The only thing I'd like to mix in is more starts from standing and self defense techniques.

I agree with Nate. This morning we did king of the guard. It was good to roll for the whole time and also work on situational positioning. I tend to get into positions that I feel I'm trapped in. As a beginner I just need to repeat repeat repeat. I love this school!

Nate,

So learn a TD, drill that TD, increase resistance and then start standing and fight for TDs?

That sounds good to me. It will be a tough class so maybe we can do it once a week. When students spend so much time rolling, a stand up class like that will kill them. I mean in a good way.

Yeah. That sounds great but it is definitely tough on the body. I can see why a lot of schools dont do live takedowns much. It would cool to see that once a week or once every other week.
