Functional training(FT) approaches jj,as the training of movements over muscle or as relates to us in jj the irrelevance of strength without mobility.and in my experience;the use of simple tools to gain complex results.FT actually discourages the use of machines and barbells in favor of dumbells, medicine balls, stability balls, wobble boards, resistance bands, etc.in jj training smarter means the ability to absorb a small set of principles.jj does not happen in isolation!!!
I'm a certified CrossFit Instructor, functional training is all I teach outside of rehab work so if anyone wants help with their workout planning feel free to ask, I'm always happy to help. Obviously Phil has a lot of experience with this type of training as well so take advantage of his wealth of knowledge. Take a look at how you're training outside of GB, if every exercise you're doing doesn't A) move a large load a long distance and quickly or B) have a direct benefit on your athletic ability (speed, timing, balance, coordination, stamina, flexibility, etc.) then chances are you don't need it. No body ever became a world champion doing leg extensions and bicep curls as their primary exercises.
i was telling flackhack tonight''there are no motor-controlled requirements on a leg-press machine.''you just push.in real-life tasks you have to balance on one leg, sidestep, and you have to get all the muscles to coordinate together.these are ''very''different patterns.the faulty assumption is that muscles are to be strenghthened one at a time- in isolation-rather than in the ever-changing alliances in which they must actually produce and reduce in real life.
something i focus on for jj trainingbasically revolves around a few guidelines.train on your feet!machines are out.vary your pace.train movements, not muscles.train for the four elements;stopping,slowing,descending/ascending,and catching
