The Northeast BJJ Association is hosting its next In-House Tournament on Saturday, September 12th at Boston BJJ.
The Tournament is open to all students from Association schools. There will be both gi and no-gi divisions. Format is double elimination (minimum of 4 matches gi and no-gi). Students with an Association membership will receive a $10 discount, priority in weight-class assignments, access to video of matches and will receive points towards the 2009 Competitor Points Race. Tournament results will also count towards the team championship at the end of the year.
There are a couple changes to the tournament format:
Advanced Divisions: The Advanced divisions will be open to competitors from all schools and there will be three advanced weight classes (Light, Medium and Heavy). Advanced divisions will be limited to eight competitors and spots will be first come, first serve. Brackets will be posted online and updated regularly. Also, blue belts or students with significant grappling experience may "compete up" in the advanced divisions, but must get permission from the tournament organizer beforehand by emailing tournaments@northeastbjj.com. Students that want to "compete up" in the advanced division cannot compete in the lesser experience levels (ie. they cannot do both intermediate and advanced - its one or the other).
Advanced division weight classes:
Light (Rooster - Light : 120 - 167.5 lbs) Medium (Medium - Medium Heavy: 168 - 194.5 lbs) Heavy (Heavy - Super + : 195 - 275 lbs)
Masters Divisions: Students have been asking for a "Masters " division so we have added it. Masters divisions are open to men age 35 or older. These divisions will follow the same format, weight classes, experience levels and rules of the adult division. If there are a small amount of competitors in the intermediate and advanced masters divisions, those experience levels may be combined (Masters White Belts will not be combined with more advanced divisions). Men over age 35 are welcome to compete in the adult division, but they cannot compete in both Masters and Adult.
Who should be going to this next in-house, how about will, sullivan, tom, dan, nate, shelby, leroy, cody, corey, kyle, pj, mark, would love to see nate brown, demetri, viggs, john ortolani and dennis do it as well. we have a formidable team if we all show up.
Don't forget to sign up for the in-house tournament by the early registration deadline this Monday (Sep 7th). Early registration is discounted to only $15 for students with an Association membership ($30 for students without a membership). Students can still register online until Thursday, September 10th, AND students can also register the day of the tournament. (Late registration is $20 for members and $35 for non-members). In addition to the registration discount, students with an Association membership will also receive priority in weight-class assignments, access to video of matches and will receive points towards the 2009 Competitor Points Race and Prizes.
Also, Association members that registered early for either the Mike Brown Seminar or the Roberto Tussa seminar can compete for free. Please use the "free tournament" link on the Member Registration page.
For students that are unsure about competing, keep in mind that this is an "in-house tournament" among our Association of schools, not the Pan Ams or NAGA. Don't worry about your cardio or your weight, the vast majority of students that compete are not doing any training other than regular class rolling. If you can roll for 20 minutes at the end of class, you can do this tournament! (most competitors will have only 2-3 matches per division). The purpose of the in-house is to provide some competition style experience for our students in a safe and comfortable environment, and to provide an opportunity to meet students and instructors from other Association schools.
I updated the adv. brackets for the last time (see top of the thread). There are still spots available for those interested. If we don't get enough competitors for the 3 adv. divisions, we will probably combine them into two (145-180lbs and 181-215 lbs).
A lot of people have been asking if they will have matches, how many people are in their division, etc. Its hard to give an answer, because more than half of students dont sign up until the day of the event. We have been able to get every student matches at all our tournaments to date, so show up on sat and there is a very good chance you will have matches. It is still only $20 to compete if you have an Association membership, which you can sign up for online at www.northeastbjj.com or sign-up for at the tournament.
I have also posted an approximate schedule on the tournament info page on the Associaiton website. Its tough to estimate the schedule exactly, because I don't know how big certain divisions will be. For those that have competed before, you know that our goal is to run our tournament very quick. We do double elimination for all divisions, and we still get most gi divisions done by 1:00pm and no-gi is done by 2:30-3:00pm. Show up at least an hour before the scheduled time of your division to make sure you aren't left out of the brackets.
Congrats to GBNH, nice work by all. The overall numbers for the individual schools don't seem to add up correctly, it looks like BBJJ has a higher total score from the 2 tourneys than it should. GBNH is in third place overall-pretty good.
I just double checked and made some corrections to all the point totals, thanks for the heads up.
You guys are only 22.5 pts out of first place, so you still have a good chance at the team title this year!
At the championship tournament in December all pts are weighted an extra 50%. So first place will be worth 9pts, 2nd is 4.5 pts, 3rd is 2.25 pts. A team could easily rack up 100 pts at this tournament with a strong showing, so any of the top 4 teams could realistically take the title.
